If you’re eligible for Medicare and live in the great state of Texas, you need to be aware of the different ways you can apply for Medicare. You can apply for Medicare in person, over the phone, by mail, or online.
If you receive disability benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board, you qualify for automatic enrollment. Your Medicare card will then be sent to you by mail. Now, suppose you do not qualify for automatic enrollment. In that case, you’ll need to enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period, which starts three months before you turn 65 and ends three months after you turn 65.
Applying Online
Suppose you have entered your Initial Enrollment Period and were not automatically enrolled. In that case, you can enroll yourself online through the Social Security Administration website. Filling out this application shouldn’t take any longer than 10 minutes, but if you wanted, you could also use this application to sign up to receive Social Security benefits. If you do not want to get those benefits just yet, that’s fine! All you have to do is apply just for Medicare and apply for the other benefits at a later time.
When applying online, there is typically no need to provide any type of documentation.
Applying In Person Or Over The Phone
If you feel more comfortable applying in person rather than online, that’s understandable! All you have to do is apply at a local Social Security office.
However, if you’d rather not apply online or in-person at all, you do have the option to apply over the phone. You can call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 and let them know you want to apply for Medicare. Now, if you worked for the railroad, you would apply through the Railroad Retirement Board instead of going through Social Security. You would then call them at 1-877-772-5772 instead of calling Social Security.
