Who Is Not Eligible for Medicare?

Eligible for MedicareMedicare is a federal health insurance program administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to cover various health care expenses. Medicare has four different parts. Medicare Part A and Part B are usually referred to as Original Medicare. Medicare Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, serves as an alternative to Original Medicare, while Medicare Part D plan covers prescription drugs.

You need to meet certain criteria to qualify for Medicare. In this article, we will be discussing those that are not eligible to enroll in Medicare.

Who Is Not Eligible for Medicare?

To understand who is not eligible for Medicare, first, you need to know the requirements for Medicare eligibility. To qualify for Medicare, you must meet at least one of the following criteria for Medicare eligibility:

  • Age 65 and older: when you turn 65, you become eligible for Medicare if you are a United States citizen or a permanent resident (who has lived in the country continuously for five years before applying) or qualify for or receive Social Security benefits.
  • Be disabled: you are also eligible for Medicare if you have a qualifying disability. You automatically get Medicare after receiving SSDI benefits for a minimum of 2 years (24 months).
  • End-stage renal disease (ESRD): if you have ESRD, you are eligible for Medicare if your health condition requires regular dialysis treatment or kidney transplant.
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS): If you have Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, you will be automatically eligible for Medicare on the first day of the month you start receiving disability benefits.

If you do not meet any of the requirements discussed above, you are not eligible for Medicare. If this is the case, you may need to consider other health insurance options to get your coverage.
