Medigap Plan A Benefits

Medigap Plan A is the most basic supplement that helps fill in the "gaps" in Medicare.

While Plan A has fewer benefits than other Medigap policies, it still covers the 20% of outpatient care that Original Medicare doesn't.

Medigap Plan A is still a very solid option, offering these benefits:

Costs Associated with Medigap Plan A

Plan A policyholders are responsible for their Part A and Part B deductibles, along with Part B excess charges, skilled nursing facility coinsurance, and foreign travel emergency expenses. Other Medicare Supplements may cover these items.

Medigap Plan A for Disabled Under 65

Plan A is made available to those under 65 in most states. If you qualify for Medicare (early) because of a disability, you can buy this policy during your Medigap open enrollment window - without medical underwriting.

However, the cost for people under 65 could be much more than what a 65 year-old would pay. If you're on Medicare disability, you may want to consider Medicare Advantage plans.

More on Plan A

If you're over 65, Plan A will be priced like any other supplement. Not many folks over 65 choose it, though. In general, they pick more comprehensive policies like F or G - due to the fuller coverage.

Also, don't confuse Medicare Part A with Medigap Plan A. They're not the same thing. Part A is your Original Medicare hospital coverage.
