Medigap Plan N

Plan N is another Medicare Supplement that has been growing in popularity. It offers the same basic benefits as Plan F, but you agree to pay some minor copayments and deductibles in exchange for lower monthly premiums.

With Plan N, you will be responsible for the annual Part B deductible ($283 in 2026) and Part B excess charges. However, this plan still has comprehensive coverage, including:

Why Choose Plan N?

Many items in the hospital, along with other key services, are covered by Plan N.

Also, Medigap Plan N usually has lower premiums than Plan G. If you prefer to pay a lower premium in exchange for accepting a small yearly deductible along with some copayments and excess charges, then Plan N is a highly appropriate option to consider.

Plan N Costs

In addition to the Part B deductible, you will pay copays of up to $20 for doctor appointments and up to $50 for ER visits that do not result in an inpatient stay.

Those with Plan N also pay Medicare excess charges to some providers. Medical providers who do not accept Medicare assignment may charge up to 15% more than the Medicare-allowed amount, resulting in occasional small bills.

However, if your providers accept Medicare assignment (and the vast majority do), you do not have to worry about excess charges under Plan N.

Am I Eligible for Plan N?

If you have Original Medicare (Parts A and B), you are eligible to apply for Plan N. You also need to live in the plan's service area.

When Should I Enroll?

The most appropriate time to enroll in Plan N is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This six-month window begins with your Medicare Part B effective date. This is your one opportunity to sign up for any Medigap plan without health underwriting, meaning insurance carriers cannot deny your application due to medical conditions.

If you have missed your Medigap open enrollment period, you may still apply for a Plan N policy, though you may be subject to health questions depending on your situation.
